After much long and hard consideration, we have selected 6 artists for the 2012 Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project with the theme of “What’s for Dinner?” We had so many good proposals this year, and the decision was very difficult. In the end, we decided to choose six artists this year instead of the usual five artists. I think these artists will make an impressive exhibition and get the children and community involved in their artworks and thinking about “What’s for Dinner.” We will welcome these artists to Cheng Long on April 12, and so keep looking at this Blog to see the progress on the installations as the artists, volunteers, children and community people start to work.

Volunteer +Working Holiday with Artists @ ChengLong Wetlands

Hello, Dear ALL, Here I help Jane to publish this post, because she cannot log in the blog and have tried whole day today. In this post Jane tell artists many hints to propose a good proposal, please did read it before submiting. Looking forward to your great ideas & Good luck!! chao-mei

1. Follow the directions carefully and submit exactly what is asked for and not anything else. If it says to send .jpg files of less than 1 mg each, do not send your images embedded in a .doc file or .pdf file, and do not send a link to your website rather than sending images of your previous works. Following directions well makes me think you are intelligent and cooperative and that you will not cause problems because you think you are so special that you deserve special treatment.

2. Show your experiences as a professional artist in the CV that you attach as a .doc or .pdf file. The CV should be in English and have recent exhibitions and show some evidence that you are a professional artist. International experience and experience working with communities and children and doing other international residencies and art projects are all good to mention. Also list any awards or grants you have received. This makes me think you are a professional artist and that others have also recognized the quality of your work. If you have no previous international or community art experience and no awards or residencies, then emphasize your willingness to learn and your fresh approach. I want a mix of experienced artists and new innovators in the project.

3. Submit good quality photos of previous works that are related to what you are proposing to make in Cheng Long and that show you could do something like what you are proposing. The photos should be clear, and photos of works on site are good. You should show some outdoor works and public artworks and not all performance art or all indoor gallery installations. This makes me think you could actually make what you are proposing and that you will not be attempting to do a type of work in Cheng Long that you have never tried before.

4. Send a sketch of the idea for your proposed work that you can scan and send as an attached .jpg file. The sketch is to give some visual form to your idea. The proposed work may change after you get here, and we expect flexibility and adaptability from the selected artists. But, I need a sketch or some sort of visual image to show your idea.

5.Send a description of your proposed work as an attached .pdf or .doc file. Your description in English of your proposed work for Cheng Long 2012 should tell how your proposed work relates to the theme and also tell about your previous work with communities and children and why you are interested in this project. Your skills in writing or in using English do not have to be perfect, but the descriptions should help me understand what you want to make in Cheng Long and what it will be made from and give some idea of its size and how the community and school children can get involved in working with you on this project. This description should not be just a general artist’s statement that you use for everything. This description should make me think you really care about coming to Cheng Long for this project and that you are sincerely interested in the environmental issues related to the theme.

6. Don’t ask the curator too many questions in emails. While some questions are good and necessary, if you ask too many, I start to think maybe you will be trouble and cannot make decisions easily for yourself. I don’t mind answering specific questions, and this can also show me that you are thinking and not just using the same old idea you might have submitted for something else. Your questions should make me think that you are thoughtful and sincerely examining creative ideas for this project.

7. Make your proposed work fit the theme and fit the place and environmental purpose of this exhibition. This year the proposed work should have something to do with the theme of “What’s for Dinner?” The proposed work should also show you have a concern for the environmental issues relating to this theme. This makes me think you have read the full Call for Proposals and maybe even studied the Blog about the art project as well as the information and photos about the wetlands, the school and the community. The Kuan Shu Education Foundation Blog about the environmental education programs can give you a lot of information just by looking at the pictures even if you can’t read Chinese.

8. Always be courteous in your emails and don’t ask the curator for special favors or special treatment. Showing a sense of humor and kind understanding in your emails is also good. This makes me think you could get along well with the other artists, and that the school children, teachers, community people and volunteers participating in the project could also get along well with you. We all become like one big family since we spend a lot of time together during the 25-day residency in this small village in southwesternTaiwan.

9. Be creative and show me with your sketch and description something I have not seen before or that I did not think of myself. Creativity and innovation are always important considerations. I like to see big ideas and impressive proposals, and I am not ruling out any medium or materials or techniques as long as they do not harm the environment. Collaborative projects are okay although our limited budget means the artist fee and travel cost would have to be split if there are two collaborating artists selected. Don’t propose the obvious and something that maybe you submitted last year or for another project. What you propose should be something you want to do and show some relationship to your previous work, but we want something unique for Cheng Long. This shows me that you really put some creative thought into your proposal for the Cheng Long project and that you really do want to come and make this artwork.

Good luck with your proposal and I look forward to receiving your proposals by the deadline of February 8, 2012. Also, let me know your thoughts about how artists are selected for projects like this and what you think makes a good proposal.

Cheng Long Wetlands, located in rural Yunlin County on the southwestern coast ofTaiwan, is a land subsidence area. Cheng Long village used to be a farmland in former times. Twenty-five years ago, a typhoon had a great impact on this area and caused a serious saltwater intrusion and submerged about a hundred hectares of farmland and fish farms, and this land has now become Cheng Long Wetlands.

In this offshore village, living conditions were already very tough. The agricultural land was no longer farmable after the flood. Although some farmers changed their lifestyle to become fishermen, others had trouble surviving; many villagers were in despair about the flooded land.

After the assessment of the flooded farmland at Cheng Long village, the Forestry Bureau thought that Cheng Long Wetlands is near the Ao Gu Wetlands, a national wetland located in Chia-Yi county, and that it had excellent ecological and recreational potential. From 2005, the Forestry Bureau started to lease 41 hectares of the flooded agricultural land allowing the land to lay fallow for a long term to slow down the speed of subsidence, and began the process of restoration to let Cheng Long Wetlands become an ecological paradise.

After several years of hard work, Cheng Long Wetlands has become a paradise for fish, shrimp, crabs, shellfish and many birds. 86 species of birds have been recorded in recent years (101species of birds were recorded in year 2011); both the variety and quantity are very respectable. Although there is a rich biodiversity in the wetlands, residents still felt alienated from the Wetlands. With this attitude, the wetlands did not provide any positive effects on their life. Sustainable management of natural resources requires the support of community residents in order to bring the benefit to each other. For this reason, the Forestry Bureau hopes the villagers can realize that Cheng Long Wetlands can play an important role in community development, and then think about the sustainable development of the community and the wetlands.

With this background, Kuan Shu Educational Foundation was invited by the Forestry Bureau to promote environmental education inChengLongVillagebeginning in the summer of 2009. The Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project – Children and Artists Celebrate the Wetlands was one of the main environmental education programs for the year 2010. The purpose of this project was to let the community inhabitants and the general public pay attention to environmental issues. The art project aroused residents’ concern with Cheng Long Wetlands successfully. Artists coming to this rustic village was a great event, especially foreign artists. The fact that artists from theUSA,FranceandIndiaas well as other parts ofTaiwanare willing to come to this barren land and create environmental sculpture artworks made some villagers start to think. That is the most important benefit from this art project.

On the other hand, villagers accepting these visitors and participating in the artworks enthusiastically was another achievement of this project. Creating a grand sculpture installation is not the most important point of the Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project, but rather helping residents to reconsider their environment and community during the art project process. It seems this goal was reached. Almost all of the Cheng Long villagers have devoted themselves to this project in some way, such as enthusiastically providing living places for artists and volunteers, assisting artists to get materials and tools for their creations, and demonstrating the traditional way to set up an oyster frame for artists’ references. The villagers made this project into their own festival. Also, the Art project has attracted a lot of concern about land subsidence and wetlands environmental issues through media coverage. In the global warming days, the sea level is rising. Building a dyke to stop water flooding onto the land subsidence area is not a good way to deal with dramatic climate changes. Holding the Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project provides a good chance for the people to think about how to adjust to the current trends in global warming, how to establish a new concept of land ethics, and to learn to live in coexistence with water. That is a serious topic we need to face and think deeply about today.

The 2011 Cheng Long Wetland Environmental Art Project on the theme of “dreaming of greener wetlands” involved artists from Bulgaria, Indonesia, and Peru as well as 2 artists from other parts of Taiwan coming to live and work in Cheng Long to make artworks with the children and community that could address issues about how to make things “greener” in Cheng Long, not only actual green plants but “green” in the sense of better for the environment. Some of the 2011 artworks are still surviving after typhoons and a hot summer and are now producing green living plants in the wetland that can provide habitat and food for the birds and wildlife.

In 2012, since the main way of making a living in Cheng Long is involved with seafood production, we decided to focus the art project on the theme of “What’s for Dinner?” emphasizing organic aquaculture and sustainable practices in seafood production. We hope that the artworks the artists propose and make this year will raise public awareness about not using so much pesticide or herbicide in fish farming and finding better ways to raise fish, shrimp, clams, oysters and other seafood that will be good for humans and good for the environment.

New Posts on the Discovery website at www.treehugger.com about the Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project

Jennifer Hattam, a reporter for the Discovery Company website at www.treehugger.com, has written two recent Posts about the Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project.

One is about the 2012 Cheng Long Wetlands art project and the theme “What’s for Dinner?” at http://www.treehugger.com/culture/food-in-focus-at-new-wetlands-art-show.html

Another post is about the 2010 Cheng Long Wetlands art project and artist Shilpa Joglekar’s recent work in India making more artworks that are children’s play areas using recycled materials. It all happened in Shilpa’s home country of India as a result of Shilpa’s experience at Cheng Long in 2010 that gave her the idea to try something similar in rural villages near Mumbai, India. Check out the web article at http://www.treehugger.com/urban-design/recycled-play-structures-bring-joy-rural-schools.html

Both of these Posts have interesting information and photos about the Cheng Long art project and may give artists some more ideas about what they can propose for the 2012 art project in Cheng Long, Taiwan. Remember the deadline for proposals is February 8, 2012.

Are you thinking of “What’s for Dinner“? Don’t forget to email Jane your proposal by 8 Feb 2012. We will have a party on 31 December in the ChengLong village. All villagers, no matter children or adults, are invited to come. Of course, we will eat, drink (combine with many science experiments) and dance(OMG, this is our first time to teach children dance!! Maybe we could present in the welcome party when artists arrive ChengLong). In the meanwhile we will ask all villagers to help with the 2012 art project and collecting materilas that you might use in your artwork. If you have some specific ideas about materials that people use in their daily life or fish farms already, Please leave message on this blog and we can start to collect and keep them. It’s almost Chinese New Year, many families will start to clean their house. It is a good timing to do collecting and recycling!! Don’t miss the chance!

Looking forward to your proposals

Wish you have a very happy and lucky New Year of Dragon !!

In 2012 we want to have some of the artworks in thevillageofCheng Longand also have some artworks sited in the wetlands nature preserve area as in 2010 and 2011. By having some works around the village we think the art project will be connected more to the daily lives of the village residents. Maybe having art installations in the village and in the wetlands is also more connected to the theme of “What’s for Dinner?” So here are some photos and information about possible sites:

1. In the wetlands
Cheng Long Wetlands is a land and water areas leased by the Forestry Bureau, and it is a nature preserve that is home to many birds and other wildlife (fish, shrimp, crabs, clams, etc.). It is now used for environmental education and nature enjoyment. You can see lots of photos of artworks in 2010 and 2011 all sited at various spots in the wetlands. The wetlands can be used for floating artworks or for those anchored to the bottom or on dry land in the wetlands. There are dry land areas and areas where there is always water (varying in depth from a few inches to over your head). Most wetlands areas change their water levels depending on the rain, tides, typhoons and the water gates that control water in parts of the wetlands. It is usually salty water or part salty and part fresh water. The earth is salty, and it is difficult to grow anything here. There are some water plants growing here and some plants on the land areas, such as reeds. There are also some graves in the wetlands area that must be left alone, and there are also some old buildings, light poles and old oyster farming structures and nets in the wetlands area. We want to have some artworks in2012 indifferent parts of the wetlands, and maybe artists can somehow use things that are already there in the wetlands as part of the art installation. We want to have some tall artworks that can be seen from a great distance as well as some that are lower and maybe floating in the wetlands.

2. On or inside old houses or buildings
There are many old houses and buildings in the village that are abandoned, but someone usually still owns them and may use them for storage or sometimes for keeping pigs or other animals. We would negotiate with the owner if an artist who is selected wanted to use such a space. The artwork could be on the walls, on the roof, inside and outside the building or house, and maybe the artist could use the house as part of the artwork. Some alterations could possibly be made to the building or house, but probably not permanent ones….it is all negotiable. There is one building near the temple that is public property now, and we are thinking that the inside and outside of this building could be used for some art installations.

3. On vacant lots in the village and in private wetland areas
There are some pieces of land in the village that are vacant and have weeds or other things left there, like maybe cars, motor scooters, oyster shell waste, etc. These vacant lots are owned by someone, and we would negotiate with the owner if a selected artist wanted to use some vacant village land. There are also some wetland areas where water has risen that are owned by private individuals. Some are fish farms too. We could ask the owners about using these areas for art installations.

4. Open space in the village
The village has made a couple of park areas in the village, and these are just across the road from the wetlands nature preserve area. One of the parks has benches, tables and some planted vegetation, the other has not facility yet. There is also a big flat land area that is where children play baseball and used sometimes for public parking in the center of the village in front of the temple. Artists could use these areas for art installations. We would negotiate with the owner if a selected artist needed.

5. Along the roads of the village, on barriers and bridges
There are many roads and lanes in the village and some of these have land spaces along the roadway, and others have a concrete barrier along the roadway. Art could be put alongside the roads or on the concrete barrier or maybe over the streets.

6. Under the highway in Cheng Long village
There is an elevated highway that runs through Cheng Long village and the area underneath this highway is an interesting place to consider for artworks. Sometimes people use this area as a sort of park. There are some huge rocks brought there to make seating, and sometimes people hang out there. It is maybe difficult for children to come there because of the traffic on each side of this area. This area is nearly always shaded and covered by the overhead roadway.

7. On walls and fences in the village or near the highway
There are interesting walls and fences around many of the houses, and villagers and children have already painted murals on some of these. There are many more to choose from if some artist has an idea for installing his artwork on a wall or fence. We would negotiate with the owner to get his permission for using the wall or fence. There are also huge concrete walls along the highway and under the highway in Cheng Long that could be used for art installations.

8. In or on an existing business or store in Cheng Long
There are some fish packing factory building in Cheng Long that maybe could be used when we get the permission from the owner. There are also a few small stores, and we could ask about using these if an artist has an idea to use this site. Some people in the village do oyster farming, and their business is stringing oyster shells together or opening oysters to get the meat out. This business is usually done in an outdoor area just in front of the home. Artists might have an idea for using these spaces too, and we could negotiate with the owners.

You can see there are lots of possibilities, and you may come up with some other site that we have not even thought of. We will want to have all the artworks easily accessible to the public for viewing and also in safe areas for the children and the community. We plan to make a map so visitors can find all the artworks easily and make signs in some creative way to guide people to all of the 2012 artworks in the village and in the wetlands. Contact Jane by email if you have any specific questions or need more information. We look forward to seeing your proposal!

Four Fish : The Future of the Last Wild Food (http://www.amazon.com/Four-Fish-Future-Last-Wild/dp/1594202567)

I would like to recommend this book that I just finished reading. It would be good background material for any artist starting to think about a proposal for the 2012 Cheng Long International Environmental Art Project and the environmental issues surrounding seafood production and this year’s theme of “What’s for Dinner?” This book is good reading and entertaining and it is also a great source of information about fish – four in particular: Salmon, Cod, Sea Bass and Tuna. This book is for anyone interested in learning more about fish and aquaculture and how we as humans can learn to eat seafood sustainably. This book is not only informative, but it is also entertaining. The author Greenberg is a writer/reporter who not only enjoys fishing and eating fish but who also journeys around the world to give us the latest in fish farming techniques and data about the rise and fall of particular fish populations. This book talks about tilapia as one of the best fish for fish farming, and this fish is one that is commonly seen in Cheng Long Wetalnds.
在這邊我要向大家推薦一本我最近看的書，書名是《四種魚的悲歌－人類最後的野生食物》(FOUR FISH: THE FUTURE OF THE LAST WILD FOOD)。

This book also had the quote below that I think is a great way of expressing what environmental art can do….raise awareness about an environmental issue.

“The first step in effecting any kind of change for any kind of issue is drawing attention to it. I think with fish we are still in that phase of “awareness enlightening.’”

With this year’s Cheng Long Wetlands International Environmental Art Project – What’s for Dinner? We hope to bring some attention to how seafood is produced in Cheng Long and start people thinking about ways to make it better for humans and the rest of nature.
