Sorry for the delay of introducing the selected artists and artworks. We have had one slight change about the 2014 artists. Amar from Mongolia will not be able to come to Cheng Long this year to participate in the project since he had some unexpected change of the schedule for a project that he had already signed the contract for in Mongolia. Now we will have a different artist and his name is Thierry Godet from France. Thierry has agreed to come to Cheng Long for the 2014 project, and we are excited that he will participate.
Below is the brief description of the 6 artists and their proposed artworks. They will come to ChenLong to complete their artworks from April 10 – May 5, 2014.
Joaquin’s sculpture installation will be a functioning water purification system using solar and wind power that will also be an artwork built with the community and the children using natural and recycled materials found in Cheng Long. Distilling and adding oxygen to the water in the Wetlands with this art installation will raise awareness about environmental issues and also provide a useful solution for making clean pure water for the fishermen to use. The wind sculpture will be sited beside a fishing hut with solar panels on the fishing hut roof. Joaquin will also work with the children in Cheng Long to design and build smaller wind and solar powered devices from recycled and natural materials.
Joaquin is originally from Spain but has lived and worked in Argentine for many years. He is a combination of engineer and artist, and he is the executive director of the Exploritorio Science Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has done art projects in Argentina, Spain, USA, Sweden, Cuba, Costa Rica, Malaysia and the South Pole. This will be his first trip to Taiwan.

Kathy Bruce – USA美國
Title: “Big Fish Through Wall”
Materials: Bamboo and other natural materials
Kathy’s sculpture installation will be a fun and surrealistic vision of a giant Milkfish jumping from a fishing hut into the water of the canal below. The front half of the fish will come out of one wall of a fishing hut, and the tail will be coming out of the opposite end of the fishing hut. The sculpture will call attention to the importance of the Milkfish to the local fishing industry and the community. Kathy will also make with the school children many smaller jumping milkfish that will be attached to a fishing hut wall nearby.
Kathy lives in NYC, and this will be her first visit to Asia and to Taiwan. She has received awards to be a Fulbright Scholar artist to Peru and an artist in residence in France as well as in the USA.

Katie Surridge – UK英國
Title: not titled yet (murals, garden and habitat for bees and insects)
Materials: Recycled, found and natural materials from the Cheng Long area, soil, living plants
Katie’s sculpture installation will transform one of the fishing huts visually as well as create a living habitat upon it. The different parts of her artwork will include murals of fishing imagery made with shells, recycled materials and other found objects in Cheng Long. She will also create a living garden using planters made from recycled materials to grow herbs, vegetables and flowers around a fishing hut as well as a home for bees and other insects on the roof of a fishing hut. Katie plans to involve the children in creating the murals and helping in all parts of her project.
Katie is from London, and she was awarded an artist in residency last year in Shanghai, China, at Swatch Peace Art Hotel. She has had many art exhibitions and art projects in the UK. She is looking forward to coming to Taiwan for the first time.
Maurice’s artwork for Cheng Long is a conceptual installation that involves the artist working with the local fishing hut owners to repair and improve their fishing huts and building a new fishing hut (or parts of one) that will be located nearby to be a record of each repair he makes. Maurice wants to engage with the local fishermen through labor, and the school children will help him to do this project that is a tribute to the work of the fishermen. He calls the hut he will make a “folly” because maybe it will not be complete or only have parts of a hut to represent all the different jobs he does on different huts in Cheng Long.
Maurice has his studio in the city of Rotterdam in Holland, and he will be coming to Taiwan for the first time. He has had many exhibitions in Europe and participated in several international environmental art projects there.
Thierry Godet – France法國
Title: not titled yet (ovens)
作品名稱: 未定 (窯)
Materials: earth, recycled materials, natural materials, old bricks, cement, and other recycled materials
Thierry’s artwork will be a grouping of ovens that will be sited around a fishing hut or in a central place near the fishing huts for use by the whole village. The ovens will be functioning ovens to use for baking bread, smoking fish, barbecue, or other purposes. Thierry plans to build many smaller ovens with the children and teach them how to build and use the ovens.
Thierry is now living in Berlin although he grew up in France and studied in Switzerland. He has participated in many international environmental art projects in Europe, Korea, & USA, and he came to Taiwan in 2009 to create an installation at the National Aquarium in Pingtung.
Yen-chen Wang (LaLa) 王彥臻 (拉拉) – Taiwan台灣
Title: Hopes Hide Inside
Materials: recycled fabric, plastic nets, plastic bottle caps, recycled CDs, feed bags, oyster shells and other recycled and natural found materials
LaLa’s artwork will be a sculpture installation that transforms a fishing hut into a gift all wrapped up with a big bow on the roof. The ribbon will have many flowers on it made with the children from recycled plastic and other materials. Inside the flowers the children and community people will symbolically place their hopes and wishes for a better environment in Cheng Long. She also plans to get the children involved in decorating recycled school bags to send to school children in another country.
LaLa is from Tainan and now is an artist in residency in San-Ying Artist Village in Taipei. She was a volunteer for the 2011 Cheng Long art project and helped Firman from Indonesia make his artwork. She is looking forward to returning to Cheng Long as one of the 2014 artists.
